Name Origin: Some references say that antimonium comes from the Greek words anti (opposed) and monos (solitude) underlining the simultaneous occurrence of antimony and other minerals

Symbol Origin: Latin (Stibium). From Latin stibium, which is a borrowing of the Greek stibi, variant of Greek stimmi (other variants: stimi, stim(m)is, stimia) meaning "eye-paint", "powdered antimony", "kohl", which was a borrowing from Ancient Egyptian sdm that also denoted "eye-paint". It refers to the use of stibnite (Sb2S3) as black eye make-up by the ancient Egyptians.
